NOTIFICATION OF RIGHTS UNDER THE FAMILY EDUCATIONAL RIGHTS AND PRIVACY ACT (FERPA)

FERPA gives a student who is at least 18 years of age or  attending a postsecondary institution,certain rights with respect to their educational records.  These rights include:

  • The right to inspect and review the student's education records within 45 days after the date the College's Registrar receives a written request for access, which specifies the records the student wishes to inspect.
  •  The right to request amendment of the student's education records that the student believes in inaccurate, misleading, or in violation of the student's privacy rights under FERPA.  The student should submit, to the Registrar, a written statement identifying the part of the records the student wants changed and specify why it should be changed.
  • The right to provide written consent prior to the College disclosing personally identifiable information from a student's education record, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes without consent.
  • The right to file a complaint with the US Department of Education concerning alleged failures by the College to comply with the requirements of FERPA.
Note: Schools may disclose, without consent, "directory" information such as a student's name, address, telephone number, date and place of birth, honors and awards, and dates of attendance. However, parents and eligible students may request that the school not disclose directory information about them by contacting the Registrar, see section 99.31 of the FERPA regulations.
